title: Overview
description: What MyNeS is, what it discovers, and how the pieces fit together.
---

**MyNeS (My Network Scanner)** is a self-hosted, open-source application that discovers,
identifies and monitors every device on your home network — including the ones a plain IP
scan can't see, like Bluetooth LE, Zigbee and Z-Wave. It runs on a LAN with no cloud
dependency and integrates with Home Assistant.

It's built for home labs: Raspberry Pi / Orange Pi clusters, NAS boxes, AI workstations and
a Home Assistant install. Everything degrades gracefully when an optional dependency or
privilege is missing — a missing tool disables one feature, never the whole scan.

## Three ways to run it

> All three share the same scanning engine and device model. Pick whichever fits where you want the scanner to live.

- **Web app (Docker or source)** — the full experience on a home server. [Install →](/installation)
- **Home Assistant add-on** — one-click Supervisor add-on that shows up in your HA sidebar. [Integrations →](/integrations)
- **Mobile app** — a standalone native Android/iOS app that scans entirely on-device. [Mobile →](/mobile)

## What it discovers

MyNeS listens to everything that announces itself, not just what answers a ping:

| Protocol | Finds |
| --- | --- |
| **ARP** | Every reachable host on the local subnet (fast, layer-2) |
| **mDNS / Bonjour** | Printers, NAS, Chromecast, HomeKit, Matter devices |
| **SSDP / UPnP** | Routers, smart TVs, cameras, game consoles |
| **Bluetooth LE** | Devices with no IP address at all |
| **MQTT** | Zigbee / Z-Wave / Tasmota devices via Zigbee2MQTT, Z-Wave JS or HA discovery |

On top of discovery it adds port and service scanning, OUI/vendor lookup, AI-assisted device
identification, a security & CVE view, scheduled monitoring with alerts, and Home
Assistant / Prometheus / InfluxDB integrations.

## Read your network four ways

The device inventory can be viewed as **Cards / Table**, an interactive **Graph**, a physical
**Topology** tree, or dragged onto a **Home plan** of your rooms. See [Features](/features).

## Next steps

- [Installation](/installation) — Docker, `docker run`, or from source
- [Configuration](/configuration) — ports, `.env`, credentials, authentication
- [Features](/features) — every capability, explained
- [Troubleshooting](/troubleshooting) — "it only found two devices" and other fixes

> **Warning —** Only scan networks you own. Scanning other people's networks without permission is illegal.
